National Caregivers Day: Celebrating the Compassion of Those Who Care for Others

National Caregivers Day, observed annually on the third Friday of February, is a time to honor the remarkable individuals who dedicate their time, energy and hearts to caring for others. This year, Liberty Home Care and Hospice recognizes the millions of Americans who provide essential—and often unseen—support to loved ones facing health challenges.

Caregivers play a vital role in maintaining the physical, emotional and social well-being of those they assist. Their kindness and dedication strengthen families, neighborhoods and entire communities.

The Essential Role of Caregivers

Caregivers manage a wide range of responsibilities, including:

  • Medical assistance and medication management
  • Personal grooming and hygiene
  • Meal preparation and household upkeep
  • Transportation and scheduling
  • Social engagement and companionship
  • Coordinating care with doctors, hospitals and insurance teams

While these tasks are demanding on their own, many caregivers juggle them alongside full‑time careers and family commitments.

Caregiving Continues to Rise Across the Nation

Caregiving in the United States has expanded significantly over the past decade, with new data highlighting just how essential—and challenging—this role has become.

According to the Caregiving in the U.S. 2025 report from the National Alliance for Caregiving (NAC) and AARP, an estimated 63 million Americans—about 1 in 4 adults—are unpaid family caregivers, a 45 percent increase since 2015.

The 2025 survey highlights the growth of millennial and Gen Z caregivers, noting that 29 percent of caregivers fall into the “sandwich generation” caring for both children and adults. Among caregivers under 50, that share rises to 47 percent. According to the survey, 64 percent of caregivers report emotional stress.

These updated statistics show that caregivers are doing more than ever and facing growing challenges that deserve recognition and support.

How to Show Appreciation on National Caregivers Day

If someone in your life is a caregiver, here are meaningful ways to express gratitude:

  • Share a heartfelt message: A personal letter or card can remind caregivers that their work is seen and appreciated.
  • Gift something comforting: Small items like books, baked treats, candles or soothing lotions can offer moments of peace.
  • Offer a much‑needed break: Your time can be a gift. Providing a few hours of respite can give caregivers the chance to rest and recharge.
  • Encourage them to access support resources: Caregivers often don’t ask for help. Sharing information about respite care or support programs can make a world of difference.

Respite Care Support Through Liberty Hospice

For our Liberty Hospice families, we provide respite care that allows caregivers to rest, take a vacation or simply regain balance.

Respite care provides up to five consecutive days of inpatient care at a Medicare-certified nursing facility or hospital, where the patient’s hospice interdisciplinary team will continue to visit them and provide care as needed. We also provide counseling and support services to families.

A Message of Gratitude

At Liberty Home Care and Hospice, we extend our deepest appreciation to every caregiver who supports their loved ones, neighbors and friends. Your compassion is powerful. Your dedication is inspiring. Your kindness deserves to be celebrated—not only on National Caregivers Day, but every single day.
